Heres my 2 cents on it.
Draftee: Forced into service, did not step forward of his/her own accord therefore less likely to perform the duties expected of them to the standards upheld by the military.
Volunteer: Stepped-up and accepted the job/challenge of defending his/her country knowing that in their service the day may come when their lives may end in this service yet will go down fighting to defend the rights and freedoms that their family/loved ones enjoy and that generation after generation of servicemen/women have died to ensure for future generations.

I agree up to a point; The volunteer system is nice, but I'm more partial to Israel's (And Germany's, correct me if I'm wrong...) system of conscripted military service - i.e. If you want to live there, you have to spend a MANDATORY time of service in the military (Though I beleive theirs is only two years, rather than our four years...). As they say in 'Starship Troopers': Service garuntees citizenship! Of course, exceptions should be made for conscientious objectors/relegious grounds, etc. but service should be mandatory for residents. If not for reasons of patriotism, then for the simple concept of community defense of the hearth and home. If you want to live here and enjoy the rights and benefits of being a citizen, you should be ready to pick up a rifle and defend it, or go looking for another home.
Not to mention that it's a lot harder for any nation to attack and occupy a country filled with veterans, as opposed to civillians or a hastily drummed-up local militia.

.in general i think that every one should have to spend some time in the military. there are a few exceptions tho. for those few i am sure that there is something that they could do to support the troops. |

I cannot comment on the draft as I've not experienced it but i'm in the process of signing up for the Royal Air Force Reserves. It's only early stages as I have to attend an open day and then if I like what I'm going for trade wise...then the tests, medicals etc start.
I suppose especially here in the UK, they could do with a draft/Military Service system of say two years due to all the crime amongst men in their late teens and twenties.
Here the reserves say for the RAF is a minimum 2 years that you sign for and the full service is a minimum 6years...though some trades a minimum of 9yrs.

`I see NONE of you folks are old enough to have served when we did have the draft.I am and did in Viet Nam 1970. We had plenty of drafties and most served and did there time as well as us enlisted did. We had no fewer problems with the drafted as we did with the enlisted. About the same.Been there...done it.

`Nowadays there's people who join to save enough cash for a career, so what's the difference?
